How it works

APY = (1 + r/n)^n − 1, where r is the nominal rate and n the number of compounding periods per year, so more frequent compounding raises the effective yield.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between APR and APY?

APR ignores compounding within the year; APY includes it, so APY is always equal to or higher than the nominal rate.

Does daily compounding matter much?

At typical savings rates the difference between monthly and daily compounding is small, but it grows with higher rates and larger balances.
