How it works
Both colours are converted to relative luminance using the sRGB formula, then compared as (lighter + 0.05) / (darker + 0.05) to produce the WCAG contrast ratio.
Frequently asked questions
What ratio do I need?
WCAG AA needs 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text; AAA needs 7:1 and 4.5:1 respectively.
Does contrast apply to icons?
Yes — meaningful icons, form borders and focus indicators need at least 3:1 against their background.
