How it works

Markup is profit divided by cost, while margin is profit divided by selling price, so the same money always produces a bigger markup number than margin number.

Frequently asked questions

Is markup the same as margin?

No. A 50% markup on a $40 cost gives a $60 price, which is only a 33.3% margin.

How do I set a price from a target markup?

Multiply your cost by one plus the markup as a decimal — cost 40 with 50% markup gives 40 x 1.5 = 60.
