How it works

Component mode uses encodeURIComponent, escaping every reserved character so the value is safe inside a query string. Whole-URL mode uses encodeURI, which leaves separators like :, /, ? and & intact so a full address stays usable.

Frequently asked questions

When should I use component mode?

Use component mode for a single value you are dropping into a query string or path segment — it escapes &, =, ?, / and other reserved characters that would otherwise break the URL.

Why does decoding fail sometimes?

A stray % that is not followed by two hexadecimal digits is not valid percent-encoding, so the decoder reports an error instead of guessing.
