How it works
Adding VAT multiplies the net amount by one plus the rate. Removing VAT divides a gross figure by one plus the rate to recover the net amount, and the difference between the two is the tax due.
Frequently asked questions
How do I remove VAT from a gross price?
Divide the gross price by 1 plus the rate as a decimal. At 20% VAT, a £120 gross price is 120 ÷ 1.2 = £100 net, so £20 is VAT.
Which VAT rate should I use?
Use the rate that applies where you trade — 20% standard in the UK, 19% in Germany, 21% in the Netherlands. Reduced and zero rates apply to some goods.
